  Selecting a Stud
Selecting a stud is a difficult and often daunting task. Many things must be considered before the decision is made. First, you must ask yourself: Why am I breeding? The purpose of breeding should always be to improve the current line or stock. Breeding for puppies is not a good breeding practice. Especially with bulldogs, which can have serious hazards in breeding, unnecessarily risking the bitch just for puppies is both foolish and dangerous. Knowing the risks beforehand can save heartbreak later. As you begin the process, take an objectionable look at the bitch. Make a list of her faults, no matter how small or insignificant. Is she fine-boned? Too long? Too short? Does she need more rib? How is the tail set? The bite? The jaw? How about size, is she doggy? Is she a small bitch? Check the standard. What would you change about your bitch to have the perfect bulldog? If you have trouble with this, go out to the local dog shows or get on the internet and find someone who has experience breeding quality bulldogs. When you find someone who is producing the quality you are looking for, contact them and ask for help. They may not have the stud you are looking for, but they should be able to help you evaluate your bitch. With your evaluation in
hand, you are ready to begin your search for a stud.  Talk to breeders, handlers, check the AKC
website, check with Bulldog Club of America, and check The Bulldogger.  Look for a stud dog that matches what you
are looking for without taking away from what you have.  This process can take a while, so be
prepared to spend some time doing your research.
  When you find the stud
you are looking for, talk with the breeder about their breeding
procedures.  Can they have the semen
shipped if necessary?  How much for the
  stud service?  How much for
  shipping?  What guarantees do they
  offer?  What qualifies as a
litter?  How many breedings do they
  provide?  What requirements do they
have?  Will they help evaluate the
  puppies?
